The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are novels by J.R.R Tolkien and the movie adaptions are directed by Peter Jackson. The trilogy consists of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Hobbit: The Desolution of Smaug and the upcoming, The Hobbit: There and Back Again (2014).

Smaug the dragon (also known as 'the golden', 'the magnificent' or 'the dragon of Erebor') is one of the last dragons of middle Earth. Smaug rose to prominence by destroying the town of Dale and capturing the lonely mountain (Erebor) and it's treasures. This event happened 150 years before the Hobbit and Smaug was already centuries old.

The Hobbit recounts the story to a group of dwarves and hobbit, Bilbo Baggins. They hatch a plan to recapture the mountain and kill the dragon, Smaug. His belly is embedded with gemstones and gold after sleeping atop of his hoard. This augmented the already impenetrable armour of his scales that covered most of his body. Bilbo studied Smaug in his liar and noticed a small bare area on his left breast. Bilbo told the dwarves of his observations and the Smaug's weakness. Bard the Bowman of Esgaroth was informed of this fact.

When Smaug next attacked the town, Bard shot his black arrow at the bare patch on Smaug's left breast (and the only weak spot in his armour). The wound was fatal. Among the dragon's possessions were the Arkenstone and a number of shirts. One was given to Bilbo by Thorin Oakenshield, the company's leader. In "Lord of the Rings", set years later, the shirt saved Bilbo Kinsman Frod from injury several times. The Hobbit: Desolution of Smaug is set in middle Earth 60 years before the Lord of the Rings.
